Final Job Shadow: DaVinci Surgical System

My final job-shadow that I completed as a Senior in Biomed was with Dr. Brandi Trammell (OBGYN). I arrived at 7:10 a.m. to meet with Dr. Trammell, knowing that I was going to sit in on her only surgery during the day. This case was a Bilateral Ovarian Cystectomy with Dermoid cells. Both of her ovaries had two large cysts with those specific dermoid cells. Dermoid cells are slow growing, cystic masses, lined by skin and filled with oil and old skin cells. Many people know of dermoid cysts as the cysts that grow hair, teeth, nails, and other strange masses. Both of the ovaries of the woman were filled with large lumps of thick black hair, which is expected from those types of cysts. They used the DaVinci Surgical System to ensure extreme accuracy regarding removing the cyst and keeping the viable parts of the ovaries. Dr. Trammell sat in the corner of the room after putting the precision tools in the abdomen as she worked on the surgeon console as the robot was over the body following her commands. It was so cool how I got to sit within arms reach of the robot as it worked and with the big screen showing me inside the uterus. I was able to see everything Dr. Trammell was doing during the surgery. It was overall a very educational and amazing experience to be able to see such an interesting surgery at my age!
