Recently in the new semester, my biomed class has been learning about orthopedics. Before Dr. barber came to talk to our class, we had to construct a slide presentation on a specific complication in orthopedics that was assigned randomly. I researched and got to know about Erb's Palsy (we created slides on descriptions, treatments, future treatments, who is effected, etc). At the end of the presentation, we prepared a question we could ask Dr. Barber.
When Dr. Barber came to speak, he briefed us on hip/knee replacements. He had replicas of his materials he uses for these surgeries and spoke on the process he goes through. These metal replacements are sized to fit the patient's body. I asked questions about limitations of physical activities (running and high impact can be questionable because of displacements), the MCAT (preparations), Matching with specialities, and balancing personal life. I really enjoyed listening to Dr. Barber speak and I am very interested in the whole world of orthopedics.
