Forensics Week Day TWO

During day two of Forensics Week 2023, we focused on digital forensics. Laura, a member of the Mobile Police Department and Federal Task Forces, spoke to us about the impact devices has on forensics. She definitely has quite the experience after she works in the US secret service electronic task force for data recovery. She not only did that, but also created digital forensics labs in Mobile as the first examiner with over 2000+ hours on Window and Mac. She is a student instructor in both basic and advanced hard-drive forensics, and more!

Every crime has digital evidence whether we know it or not. Almost every individual now owns some type of device that can be tracked (whether that be laptops, cameras, tracking devices, phones, drives, etc). With technology advances, we have seen cameras specifically become more innovative through pens, glasses, air fresheners, toilet brushes, hooks, and everything else. It has become so secretice that the basic human eye could never suspect a device in our everyday items hidden. Because of this, she has an electronic storage device dog that sniff out any devices. The dog is imprinted with a chemical compound found in circuit boards that can be identified. Her dog has to practice her skills everyday so it can be as speedy as possible when identifying the compound. She even showed us examples of how quick her dog can find them by placing devices around our classroom. It was so amazing!
