We had the chance of selecting a form of Technology in the Medical field and creating a presentation to teach our class about our tech.
My technology I chose was Telehealth/Telemedicine. It can be described as electronic telecommunications for long-distance health care (like health related education, administration, and public health). It is basically videoconferencing in short terms.
Telehealth, unlike telemedicine, is broader in its services. Telemedicine is remote services specifically clinical and telehealth can be nonclinical (meetings, training, etc). Have you ever had so much going on in your schedule that you don’t have time to go in for an appointment or lab? Well telehealth allows you to call in to the office from your car, house, school, or work. Telehealth can be accessed through your phone, Ipad, computer through a phone-call or facetime. Pretty much any health professional can use telehealth. The only thing is some checkups and appointments require labs and hands-on evaluations. From dermatologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, to obgyns, Telehealth is used to connect and check with their patients from the comfort of their own homes. It makes 1/4 of the IT health market. The only concern that we see is that you cannot quite see the severity of a diagnosis through the screen. Other than that, it is a same and affordable option.
I really enjoyed my classmate Gracie's presentation on Med Cottages. Med Cottages, or Granny Pods, are basically small homes for elders to stay safe on the late stages of life. They have many safety gadgets and security add-ons for independent living. These can be installed outside a family member or caregivers house. Overall, technology in medicine can come in all shapes and sizes and granny pods are a great example of where med tech has gotten.
