This week of biomed consisted of getting familiar with more medical terminology and our field of interest. Still starting each day off with a fun and upbeat game of balderdash, we got to test our abilities of defining complex medical terms. It is always a fun way to get the brain working at the beginning of class. As for real assignments for the week, we had to research and understand scholarly writing. We compared and contrasted scholarly writing and storytelling to really understand the strictness and principles of an educational paper. After all, we will be spending an extreme amount of time constructing a scholarly paper for our field of interest. We also had to prepare and send out final proposal to the Capstone Committee. We had to finalize and proof our proposal carefully from grammatical errors. Lastly, we had to create a slide presentation to convince our classmates on why our field of interest is the best. We had to learn how to record and upload voice recording to each individual slide to present to the class.
One of the coolest parts of the week was that we got to go on a tour at the Retreat at Saad's Hospital. The Retreat is a hospice facility that is designed to look like a log cabin. This design allows hospice patients and their loved ones to feel at peace and not like they are in a hospital. For example: the waiting rooms looked like living rooms, the nursing station and equipment was all tucked away, the rooms looked like hotel rooms, the beds are bigger, and many more details that make the experience more soothing. It was very sweet to hear about how compassionate and thoughtful the workers are at the facility and how much they care about the patients lasts wishes. Interesting facts: they decorated a patients room to look like a hot air balloon as part of her bucket list, the rooms have balconies that overlook the forest, there are nature trails for families, they have owls as their mascot around the facility.
