Weekly Blog 2022-09-26 thru 09-30

This week in biomed III was filled with many busy activities. While we did not do the usual Balderdash challenge during the week, we still had multiple assignments to fill the week. We had 5 notecards that are going to outline our paper that were due this week. These 5 notecards were written about procedures in our field of interest. These procedures have to be currently performed by a General Surgeon. These cards are labeled with our name, field of interest, source, and number. After the cards, we completed a discussion post on Google Scholar, and what that contributes to credible paper writing. Google Scholar is commonly used as a resource for students. Students can use Google Scholar to safely create a paper with a credible and reliable source to cite. It is a simple domain that is no harder to use than regular Google. The information found on Google Scholar is known as “scholarly literature”. Scholarly literature is written by the best of the best and the experts of a certain field. That is why you know you will get trustworthy information from Google Scholar compared to an unreliable source like Wikipedia, which is easily modified by the average person. Things someone could find on Google Scholar would be universities, repositories, court opinions, academic publishers, professional societies, articles, theses, books, and abstracts. We also started focusing in on finding a mentor this week. Another assignment we had to complete was a contact spreadsheet to find a mentor and a list of interview questions we will ask them.

For the last two weeks, we have been working on a surgical scrub skills lab. With this skills lab, had to record/edit a video with a partner on how to correctly perform a proper "surgical scrub". While it takes roughly 10 minutes to properly cleanse your arms and forearms, we had to condense the video to 2 to 3 minutes with instructions, voiceover, and pictures/videos. Our videos had to be uncluttered, with scrubs, correct editing, and with a stainless sink. My partner was Charlie Anne and we constructed our surgical scrub videos on Inshot. After syncing the videos with Inshot, I added different text to each step and recorded a voiceover in sections. Properly cleansing your arms and forearms is so important for surgery as bacteria and germs is the first thing to get rid of. While the routine may take a while, it is all worth it to ensure safety.
