Weekly Blog 2022-10-21

We travelled to the University of South Alabama to tour their Allied Health facilities. We got to see PA, PT, OT, Radiological Sciences, Speech and Audiology, Biomedical Sciences, EMS departments all in one day! I found it interesting that all of the departments are located in the same building, but EMS was a separate part of campus. We started the morning off with talking to the head of the PA department. I learned that even PAs can perform certain surgical procedures. I enjoyed PT and OT as we got to complete a few activities with both departments. We rotated through physical therapy activities and we got to make cookies with impaired vision glasses at occupational therapy. We got to watch a student in the EMS department intubate a mannikin, which was pretty cool. Once we got to the Radiological Science department, we got to tour their machinery. Towards the end of the day, we visited the joint speech and audiology department, which showed us the way they fix speech impediments and impaired hearing with hearing aids. I liked seeing the Biomedical Science building a lot, as that would be something I would get to use. While I am not interest an any of the departments specifically, I highly enjoyed seeing their facilities and programs. I was very impressed how large and put together everything was. South is one of my opinions for college to major in Biomedical Sciences (Pre-med), Spring Hill still has my heart. All in all, I really enjoyed getting to see these school's facilities and faculty.

This week in Biomed, we have worked on finalizing our first steps to our paper and mentor. We had to create notecards on a Google Scholar medical journal or website. I wrote a separate blog for my mentor interview about Dr. Butts. We also designed our JackOLantern that is due next Monday. We had to draw our field of interest on the pumpkin to display at the campus. I created an outline and thesis for my paper that we will start writing soon.
