On Monday October 4th, my Intervention Biomed Class (of all seniors) travelled to Spring Hill for a fun busy day. We left homeroom and all split into groups to carpool to the campus. Once we were there, we went to the admission building to go on our Spring Hill Campus tour. While I have already been on campus multiple times (I run there a bunch and I have been on 2 tours already), it was refreshing to walk around a campus I already love. I loved doing the skills lab and touring the nursing division. We learned how to dress wounds from a junior nursing student on a manikin, which was not too complicated. My favorite part of the skills lab was viewing the manikins that they had. While they had the basic non-functioning manikins, they had 2 ones that could speak, have a blood pressure, pulse, blink, seize, etc. One of them was a pediatric patient with an IV and the other was a pregnant woman. The pregnant manikin was able to have a baby, so the nurses can learn how the process can actually be. I found it so innovative and important for them to have this technology, because a video cannot show what actual bodily functions can do. We also sat in on an Intro to Nursing class with freshman students. I do not see myself going the nursing route at all, but I did enjoy listening to a class on basic vital signs, sexuality, and family. Spring Hill has been my number one choice for college as I have always been drawn to the intimate class sizes, distance from home, potential for sports, and high success rate in medical school. All in all, the day solidified my already love for Spring Hill and I am excited to get closer to going there.
On the other days of the week, we debriefed our busy field trip day and focused on our mentor. We had to complete 5 notecards on technology for our field of interest. These note cards are going to come into great use when starting our paper. For our mentors, we had to use the spreadsheet that we already created to get into contact with our potential mentors. I emailed Dr. Caleb Butts, and he responded extremely fast. We had to schedule an interview with our soon-to-be mentor, so we can ask questions/get to know them. We also have a mentor sign an agreement.
